General guidelines for installation and use of LED-lightning
Because of the many benefits of LED lighting, we have during the last years, gradually updated our assortment to keep up with the automotive industry. Even if the technology for trailers not changes that fast, we would like to come up with new innovative solutions.
There are many reasons why you should switch to LED, especially for the electrical efficacy but also for the long life and low maintenance. In addition the LED lamps are waterproof and not the least, the ”optical design”, not only stylish but it also give clear, consistent light.
New installation or replacement of individual lamps are relatively simple, thanks to the cable connection, bayonet connectors and ”smart cable”. This requires no specific technical training.
The biggest challenge is currently on the vehicle side. The modern cars today are often equipped with CAN-buss system (Controller Area Network).
CAN-buss system offers several advantages, such as rapid transfer and processing data between different control units and components. A disadvantage is that when switching to LED lights on the trailer, it is a change in power supply and resistance. The system does not recognize this and indicate it as an error.
Furthermore, there are vehicle manufacturers (as Volvo) with systems that sends out signals in short intervals (2-3/sec) to the control function for the rear light unit of the trailer. This has no effect on normal trailer lighting but for LED light this will give a flickering light. This is of course not allowed.
To overcome these problems, it is now possible to set up a resistance, which makes the trailer LED light compatible with the vehicle’s system.
